There are 600 species of bark beetles. All of them attack and kill live trees. Very destructive, very costly. The most common you've probably heard of, the Emerald Ash Borer. One of the most beautiful woods, Ash, ( they even make caskets from it) being destroyed by a beetle! Then we have powder post beetles, a very common wood destroying beetles here in Ohio. Look at any farmers barn beams and you'll see a "buckshot" look. This is all from a very tiny beetle, 1/12" to 1/5". The larva is the culprit, eating their way into the wood creating "tunnels"as they feed on the wood. They emerge late winter to early summer. females lay eggs on wood pores. the eggs become grubs (larva) , eat into the wood, the, you guessed it, do it all over again. It may also take several years to do this. this cache is on the edge of the lexington quaker cemetary. watch out for fishy muggles. please return as found. FYI, this is an OX beetle, and they only eat decaying roots.
