Geocache Description:

Night time in the park can be a wonderful experience. Frogs come out and sing through out warm spring evenings, the air cools down on the hot summer days, the Autumn leaves sound crisper at night and Bats can be seen flying around light poles, catching insects, and on still winter nights, owls are heard echoing their calls through the forest.

The trail that I've laid out will take you on a moderate 1.5 mile hike through the park with some challenging elevation changes along the way. This is a loop that will start on a foot bridge crossing Irondeqouit creek, near the parking coordinates. From there look for the first of the reflective tacks and follow the trail past the bathrooms and event cottages, where in the summer months, you may spot some interesting moths resting on the exterior walls, under the lights. The trail continues along the maintence road for a short time before entering the forest. The sounds of the highway are ever present, but if you listen closely, you can hear frogs in the spring time and Barred owls throughout the year, calling out across the forest.

The tacks should be well laid out and easy to follow with the next tack being not too far from the last. The tacks end at the location of the cache, and you will need your GPS or phone to guide you back to parking to complete the rest of the 1.5 mile loop.

Come out with a group or a friend or two and experience this wonderful park this evening by flashlight.

Following the Firetacks

  • look for single firetacks marking the way, some of these can be quite high up.
  • a head lamp or a flashlight held at eye level works best to reflect the light back to your eyes
  • 2 tacks next to each other marks a turn on the trail, with the higher tack signaling the direction of the turn. If you're unsure of which way to go, the next tack should be visible from these double tacks.
  • the trail ends with 3 tacks arranged in the shape of a triangle. The cache will be within thirty feet from here.

The Cache

Once you make it to the end of the trail, you will find a night time themed container, securely holding the cache inside. You will need a 9v battery to figure out how to unlock the box and find the cache. You must sign the log book in order to claim the find. The cache itself has room for a few travel bugs and trade items and in keeping with letterbox tradition, it has a handmade stamp inside for your stamp book and I would encourage you to stamp the log book with your own stamp or even draw a little picture if you like, have fun with it.

FTF gets a golden path tag, only available as a FTF prize
