Geocache Description:

This is a quick hike in the Amber Cache series which brings you to George E. and Katherine H. Church Wildlife Conservation Area. You will be looking for a small camo'd container. No hint given due to its simplicity.

This land is preserved in perpetuity through the generosity of George E. And Katherine H. Church. The Church's were a beloved Rochester couple who served the town and its people through out their lives. His family settled along the Mattapoisett Riverin the 1700's to farm and sell timber sawn in their mill to the thriving shipbuilding industry located at Mattapoisett Villiage on the coast. George was one of the last living descendants of the colonist Benjamin Church who fought King Philip in the late 1600's. Katherine Hartley also served her county as a nurse cadet and on returning to her family served her community as school nurse in neighboring Acushnet. The Hartley's Were Rochesters largest and most influential family. They owned and operated Hartley's Saw Mill and store located on Gifford's brook. Katherine's first love was working with and nurturing young lives either through her work as a school nurse, or in the community teaching first aid and swimming at the family compound on Snows Pond. In the 1950's, following the 2nd world war and having served in the Army Air Corps in England, George was Rochesters most eligible bachelor. George and Katherine fell in love, married and continued to serve the community throughout their many years together. It was Katherine's wish that this land be preserved for all to enjoy in its natural state and following her death in 2007, George made that possible. Enjoy your visit and remember the generosity of the couple who loved Rochester and wanted to preserve this property forever.
