Geocache Description:

Barcaldine led the way with the supply of electricity.  The first generator was water driven under the towns Water Tower in Pine Street.

Then a charcoal burning one was installed with charcoal provided by nearby Lake Dolly.  All these supplied DC power.

AC power happened from 1953 to 1956.  Thus, Barcaldine, the first central western town to provide electricity for its residents (in 1915) became the Central Western Regional Electricity Board (CWRED), an electric authority for a wide area of the central district - Muttaburra, Aramac, Jericho and Alpha, Blackall, Tambo, Ifracombe, Isisford and Longreach.

In 1985, the State Electricity Grid took over, and the power house was sold off.  A backup power supply of a gas turbine was built with gas coming from west of Blackall, then later from Moonie.

Today, there are more than 160,000 single axis tracking solar panels in operation.  If you are interested, the full story is on the webpages at Barcaldine Power & Energy
