Geocache Description:

Bears

Bears are  defined as any of a family (Ursidae of the order Carnivora) of large heavy mammals of America and Eurasia that have long shaggy hair, rudimentary tails, and plantigrade feet and feed largely on fruit, plant matter, and insects as well as on flesh.

Bears are grouped in seven genera of large mammals classified as the family Ursidae. Bears are included in the largest order of Carnivora. Even though they are considered carnivores they also eat grasses, herbs, berries and nuts. Bears are distinguished by their heavy bodies, short tail and short, round ears. They have plantigrade feet (where both heel and sole touch the ground at the same time) and a hind foot with five toes. Like humans bears have molar teeth which allows them to crush up and eat plants.

You can find some type of bear on every continent except Africa, Antarctica and Australia. Polar Bears live in the Artic coast areas. Brown Bears also known in some places as a Grizzly Bear. The difference between a Brown and Grizzly Bear are that the Grizzly has white tipped fur. They live in Northern Temperate Zones. There are several types of Black Bears. The North American Black Bear varies in color from white, black, bluish, blonde and reddish-brown (cinnamon) color phases. The Asian Black Bear has a black coat with a white V on its chest and a white upper lip. China’s  Sun Bear has short black fur with an irregular white or yellow mark on its chest and a light muzzle. In the Tropical Forests live the Sloth Bear with long shaggy black coat with a white mark on its chest. The Spectacled Bear of the Andes is named for its yellow facial markings on its shaggy black coat.

Bears can live anywhere from 15 to 30 years in the wild. They have a good sense of smell, sight and hearing. In my research I found out that not all bears hibernate. If they do hibernate it could be for 3 to 5 months. A hibernating bear can wake up and leave its den for a while and then return and go back to sleep.

A female bear’s gestation period last from 6 to 9 months. She will give birth to 1 to 4 cubs. The cubs are very small at birth usually around 10 ounces. The cubs require their mothers care for 2 to 3 years. The mother bear protects her cubs from older male bears who will kill and eat them and other threats in their habitat.
