Stowe has put together a walking tour of eleven historic sites in Sterling Forest. These include homesteads, a sawmill, and a one-room schoolhouse which were in the now abandoned town of Sterling. Maps of the sites are displayed at the trailheads at the Sterling Gorge and Sterling Forest parking areas. Interpretive signs have been placed at each of these sites. This cache is near the Jackman Farm Site. Thomas C. Jackman purchased the land in 1867, raised his family here, and sold it in 1902. . The cache is within view of the home site, but not inside it. Please do not go inside the cellar hole, as it is important to preserve this historic structure.
The cache is a micro which may be winter friendly. It is at the junction of the Sterling Gorge path and the Catamount Trail. A copy of the Sterling Forest map is in the gallery and may be helpful in planning your hike.
Although the area is open year-round, we recommend staying away during mud season to preserve both the trails and your car.
