Geocache Description:

Twenty nineth in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum, One Memorial Place, Norfolk, VA 23510. The Chrysler Museum is open Tues.- Sat. 10 am - 5 pm, Sunday from Noon - 5 pm. Admission is Free. Website: www.chrysler.org. This terra cotta sculpture may be seen in Gallery 105 (Pre-Columbian Art) at the museum.

Measuring 37 ¾ x 14 ½ x 8 inches, this terracotta figure of a standing warrior was produced in Veracruz, Mexico ca. 600–900. Depicted with wide, menacing eyes, and with mouth open and teeth barred, the figure originally held a weapon in its upraised left arm. The small circular opening in its trunk is the object’s firing hole, which cleverly doubles as the figure’s navel. The net of tiny scales covering its trunk, arms, and legs is armor. In life, such battle armor would have been made from an enemy’s flayed skin.

Pre-Columbian art refers to the visual arts of indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, North, Central, and South Americas until the late 15th and early 16th centuries, and the time period marked by Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas. Pre-Columbian art thrived throughout the Americas from at least 13,000 BCE to the European conquests, and sometimes continued for a time afterwards. Many Pre-Columbian cultures did not have writing systems, so visual art expressed cosmologies, world views, religion, and philosophy of these cultures, as well as serving as mnemonic devices. These cultures produced a wide variety of visual arts, including painting on textiles, hides, rock and cave surfaces, bodies especially faces, ceramics, architectural features including interior murals, wood panels, and other available surfaces.
