Questa multi vi porterà alla scoperta di alcuni monumenti caratteristici del centro storico di Locorotondo, lungo una breve ma piacevole passeggiata tra vicoli fioriti e cummerse (i tipici tetti spioventi delle case del centro storico).

Step 1

Ci troviamo all'entrata principale del centro storico di Locorotondo, che si apre su piazza Vittorio Emanuele II; qui un tempo sorgeva la vecchia porta Napoli, quando ancora il paese era fortificato da mura e torrioni. Una volta varcata la soglia, troviamo sulla destra l'ufficio informazioni ed accanto ad esso una targa commemorativa dedicata ad Aldo Moro: vi servirà l'anno ABCD indicato sulla targa stessa.

Recatevi a N 40° 45.(2194-ABCD)' E 017° 19.(2756-ABCD)'.

Step 2

Addentrandoci nel centro storico, si sorpassa la caratteristica Torre dell'Orologio (sede della biblioteca comunale), per poi arrivare nei pressi di un palazzo barocco: esso rappresenta una delle poche testimonianze di dimora signorile ancora integre a Locorotondo, con una facciata decorata risalente ai primi del Settecento. Cercate il numero civico (FG) indicato nell'immagine dello Step 2:

recatevi a N 40° 45.[(FG*6) - 4]' E 017° 19.[866-(FG*3)]'.

Step 3

La passeggiata continua fino a raggiungere questa suggestiva chiesetta incastonata tra le case del borgo, sintesi delle due strutture tipiche della zona: è infatti costituita da una cummersa a navata unica con volta a botte e da un cono di trullo come cupola. Leggendo il pannello descrittivo si trova una data HIJK.

Recatevi quindi a N 40° 45.(2159 - HIJK)' E 017° 19.(2754 - HIJK)'.

Step 4

Ci troviamo ora davanti alla chiesa principale del paese, eretta tra il 1790 e il 1825 sui ruderi delle fondamenta di altre due chiese (di cui si possono osservare all'interno alcuni resti grazie a sezioni di pavimento in vetro), la precedente cinquecentesca e il primitivo Casale San Giorgio. La cupola si staglia sul panorama circostante ed è ben riconoscibile quando si ammira Locorotondo da lontano: sul pannello informativo a sinistra della chiesa troverete informazioni sull'altezza (LM) della cupola. 

Adesso sarete in grado di raggiungere il final a N 40° 45.[(LM*7) - 123]' E 017° 19.[383 + (LM*13)]': vi consiglio di raggiungerlo passando dallo Step 4b, vecchio final della multi e che ho aggiunto come step intermedio. Si tratta di un punto panoramico da cui ammirare la Valle d'Itria, chiamato dai locali "chépevinde" (in italiano capovento), per via dei forti venti che spesso soffiano in questo punto del centro storico: mi dispiaceva lasciarlo fuori da questa multi dopo aver dovuto cambiare il final.

This multi will allow you to discover some of the characteristic monuments of the historic center of Locorotondo, along a short but pleasant walk through flowery alleys and cummerse (the typical sloping roofs of the houses in the historic center).

Step 1

We are at the main entrance of the historic center of Locorotondo, which opens onto Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II; here once stood the old Naples gate, when the town was still fortified by walls and towers. Once you have crossed the threshold, we find on the right the information office and next to it a memorial plate dedicated to Aldo Moro: you will need the year ABCD that you'll find on the plate.

Go to N 40° 45.(2194-ABCD)' E 017° 19.(2756-ABCD)'.

Step 2

Entering the historic center, we encounter the characteristic Clock Tower (hosting of the municipal library), and then we arrive near a baroque palace: it represents one of the few testimonies of a stately home still intact in Locorotondo, with a decorated facade dating back to the early eighteenth century. Look for the house number(FG) indicated in the image of Step 2

Go to N 40° 45.[(FG*6) - 4]' E 017° 19.[866-(FG*3)]'.

Step 3

The walk continues until you reach this suggestive church set between the houses of the village, a synthesis of the two typical structures of the area: it is in fact made up of a single nave cummersa with a barrel vault and a cone of a trullo as a dome. Reading the descriptive panel you will find a HIJK date.

Go then to N 40° 45.(2159 - HIJK)' E 017° 19.(2754 - HIJK)'.

Step 4

We are now in front of the main church of the town, built between 1790 and 1825 on the ruins of the foundations of two other churches (of which some remains can be observed inside, thanks to sections of glass floor), the previous one of the sixteenth century and the primitive Casale San Giorgio. The dome stands out against the surrounding landscape and is easily recognizable when you admire Locorotondo from afar: on the information panel to the left of the church you will find information on the height (LM) of the dome.

Now you will be able to reach the final at N 40° 45.[(LM*7) - 123]' E 017° 19.[383 + (LM*13)]': I suggest you to approach it by crossing the Step 4b, the old final of this multi that I added now as an intermediate step. It's a panoramic point from which you can admire the Valle d'Itria, called by the locals "chépevinde" (in English literally "cape of the wind"), due to the strong winds that often blow in this point of the historic center: it was a pity to leave it out from the multi after I had to change the final location.
