Geocache Description:

Teddy Bear

A teddy bear is a stuffed toy in the form of a bear

The definition for teddy bear is: A toy bear, usually covered with plush.

The term Teddy bear came from the nickname for President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.

Bear

Bears are  any of a family (Ursidae of the order Carnivora) of large heavy mammals of America and Eurasia that have long shaggy hair, rudimentary tails, and plantigrade feet and feed largely on fruit, plant matter, and insects as well as on flesh.

Teddy bears and fictional bears over time have developed a life of their own. You may have seen teddy bears and bears on TV, in movies, in songs or in books. We are now going to look at some of those teddy bears and bears.

Don Freeman was an American painterprintmakercartoonist, and an illustrator and writer of children's books. He often used Times Square as the backdrop of his memorable works.

Corduroy is a 1968 children's book written and illustrated by Don Freeman, and published by Viking Press. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its "Teachers' Top 100 Books for Children."[1] It was one of the "Top 100 Picture Books" of all time in a 2012 poll by School Library Journal.

Don Freeman said that he had an idea of writing a story taking place in a department store, in which a character wanders around after the doors close. He wanted the storyline to portray a difference between the luxury of such department store and the simple life most people live, at the same time highlighting basic values.

Don Freeman created a sequel, A Pocket for Corduroy, in 1978. In 2006, children's book author B. G. Hennessy published Corduroy Lost and Found as a sequel to Don Freeman's original works.  A special 40th anniversary edition of Corduroy was released in 2008.

Corduroy was made into a short television movie, it was animated, a TV series and a stage production.
