Geocache Description:

Teddy Bear

A teddy bear is a stuffed toy in the form of a bear

The definition for teddy bear is: A toy bear, usually covered with plush.

The term Teddy bear came from the nickname for President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.

Bear

Bears are  any of a family (Ursidae of the order Carnivora) of large heavy mammals of America and Eurasia that have long shaggy hair, rudimentary tails, and plantigrade feet and feed largely on fruit, plant matter, and insects as well as on flesh.

Teddy bears and fictional bears over time have developed a life of their own. You may have seen teddy bears and bears on TV, in movies, in songs or in books. We are now going to look at some of those teddy bears and bears.

Stan and Jan Berenstain (Stanley Melvin Berenstain and Janice Marian “Grant” Berenstain) authored the stories “The Berenstain Bears”. The “Berenstain Bears” is by Stan and Jan Berenstain and continued by their son, Mike Berenstain, who assumed partial authorship in 2002, and full authorship in 2012 following Jan's death. The books feature a family of grizzly bears who generally learn a moral or safety-related lesson in the course of each story.

The first book was published in 1962 was “The Honey Hunt”.

The series has grown to over 300 titles.

The Berenstain’s first bear story arrived on the desk of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. Geisel spent the next two years ruthlessly challenging the Berenstain’s to make improvements to the writing and structure and to connect with their characters on a deeper level.

The Berenstain Bears, who reside "in a big treehouse down a sunny dirt road deep in Bear Country," consists of Papa Bear, a bumbling carpenter; wise Mama Bear, a housewife and perfectionist; and their children, Brother Bear (originally Small Bear), and later additions Sister Bear and Honey Bear.

The stories usually begin with the kids facing a problem. They turn to Papa, who offers a solution that only makes the problem worse. Enter Mama, who eventually sets everyone straight. Story lines have included going to the dentist, bullying, online safety and many other issues that children could encounter in life.

The Berenstain Bears over the years have appeared in television, museum exhibits, stage shows, feature films,  and in video & software games.
