[PL] Nie da się chyba zaprzeczyć, że Suwałki i Suwalszczyzna znane są w Polsce przede wszystkim ze swoich niskich temperatur. Chociaż latem temperatury mogą tutaj swobodnie przekroczyć 30°C, statystycznie i tak jest to poza górami najchłodniejszy rejon Polski. Nie jest jednak prawdą, że można tutaj spotkać białe niedźwiedzie. Faktem jest natomiast, chociaż może trudno w to uwierzyć, że mamy w zamian … najprawdziwszą wieczną zmarzlinę!
Jej istnieje zostało potwierdzone w roku 2010 odwiertem Udryń PIG-1 i było sensacją geologiczną na skalę europejską, jako że jest to jedyne potwierdzone miejsce występowania wiecznej zmarzliny w Europie Środkowej. Ta reliktowa zmarzlina występuje tutaj prawdopodobnie na obszarze ok. 50 km2 i zaczyna się w miejscu odwiertu na głębokości 357 m. Ponieważ jednak odwiertu dokonano do głębokości całkowitej jedynie 450 m, nie można stwierdzić ile metrów niżej dalej sięga. Naukowcy szacują, że w okresie ostatniego zlodowacenia, które zakończyło się tutaj ok. 13 tys. lat temu i którego pozostałością jest ta zmarzlina, mogła ona sięgać do 600 m w głąb ziemi.
Nie tylko więc Syberia czy Alaska, ale również i Suwalszczyzna ma swoją wieczną zmarzlinę. Jeśli chciałbyś zobaczyć miejsce po odwiercie, zostało ono oznaczone jako waypoint. Stojąc jednak nawet przy samym keszu i tak masz prawdopodobnie lód pod swoimi stopami. Może ta świadomość przyniesie Ci odrobinę ochłody, jeśli znajdziesz się tutaj w upalny, letni dzień.

Jeśli przyjechałeś tutaj samochodem, najlepiej z drogi asfaltowej skręcić w miejscu oznaczonym jako waypoint i podążać dalej piaskową, chociaż w pełni przejezdną drogą, która doprowadzi pod sam kesz.

[EN] Suwałki and the surrounding area are known in Poland for their low temperatures. They are caused by the influence of the continental climate from Russia, characterized by cold winters but also high summer temperatures, which can then easily exceed 30°C . Still, people remember only about these cold winters (in fact warmer and warmer every year now) and it is a source of many jokes about the region. Perhaps there is a grain of truth in them but probably nobody expected us to have... real permafrost!
Permafrost, which can be defined as ground that permanently remains frozen for many years, is most typical of the Arctic and subarctic areas. Therefore, no one expected it so far from the Arctic Circle. And yet, its existence was confirmed in 2010 by a borehole drilled here (Udryń PIG-1) and was a geological sensation on a European scale as it is the only confirmed permafrost site in Central Europe. This relict permafrost probably covers an area of about 50 km2 and begins at the site of the borehole at 357 m below the ground level. However, as the drilling reached here only 450 m, its total present thickness remains unknown. Scientists estimate that during the last ice age, which ended here about 13 thousand years ago and which left this permafrost, it could reach the depth of about 600 m.
So not only Siberia or Alaska but also the Suwałki region has its permafrost. If you wish to see the exact borehole site, it is marked as a waypoint. But even if you are just standing next to the cache, you have ice under your feet anyway. Perhaps remembering this will bring you some relief if you come here on a hot, summer day.
