Geocache Description:

📍 Nestor's Cave – Voidokilia, Greece

On the rock where Palaiokastro was built, at the southwest end of the stunning Voidokilia Bay, you’ll spot a cave carved into the cliff. This is Nestor’s Cave, named after the legendary son of Neleus. According to myth, this is where the royal cattle were kept — and where the trickster god Hermes hid the 50 cattle he stole from Apollo.

But this cave isn't just myth. Archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann uncovered finds here dating back to the time of Nestor, proving ancient life once thrived in the area. The cave is dotted with stalactites and steeped in history.

🎬 Hollywood meets Homer

In March 2025, this very cave became a film set for Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. The dramatic scene with the Cyclops Polyphemus was filmed right here, using a massive 6×6 meter mechanical puppet built inside the cave.

Actors including Matt Damon (as Odysseus) and a full crew filmed in and around the cave and Voidokilia Beach. You’re literally walking in the footsteps of both Homer’s myth and Hollywood magic.

🥾 Ready for a little hike?

If you’ve been relaxing at the beach, this is your cue to lace up your shoes. The path up to the cave starts at the north end of the beach. The climb is not too difficult — we did it with two children aged 6 and 8 without any trouble. The view from the top is spectacular, with the turquoise bay stretching out below.

The cave is located just under the castle walls, making the final approach relatively easy. Bring a flashlight if you want to explore the interior.

🎁 Geocache Tip

Inside, you’ll find the cache. As always: take something, leave something. Maybe leave a little tribute to Homer… or Nolan!
