Geocache Description:

IKAT: The Wonders of Warp and Weft.... The answer is LOOMING in front of you!

Ikat is an incredible unique Indonesian craft.

Ikat (literally Indonesian for “bundle”, adding a prefix to this root word becomes mengikat “to tie”). More generally, though, this term refers to a complicated and time-consuming resist-dye and weaving technique.  During the process, undyed yarns are mounted on a frame in bundles according to the desired pattern and tied in place (or sometimes even covered in wax). During the subsequent dyeing process, the tied/waxed areas resist the absorption of dye and remain uncolored; repeated tieings and dyeings can result in a multihued pattern of great intricacy. (This is on some level similar to the concept behind Indonesian batik as well as Ukrainean easter egg dying.)  The planned designs may be applied to either the stationary longitudinal warp threads alone (resulting in warp ikat), or, in a more challenging process, designs are dyed onto the weft (the single long thread which is woven back and forth amongst the warp threads (weft ikat) – OR designs may be dyed onto both thread systems at once, so that the patterning of each one supplements the other in the most complicated manner (resulting in the intricate double ikat).

Traditionally, ikat designs are primitive figures using natural dyes in subdued blue, white, red, brown, and black colours.  In many regions, each village has their own traditional ikat, with a unique design and colour scheme.

For those of you interested in the finer details of the differences between warp, weft and double ikat, you can find more information here: https://nogoikat.com/about/

Finding the cache itself will challenge your powers of very detailed observation and perhaps knowledge of loom engineering and construction.  This may require multiple trips, and as noted in the attributes, once you find the container you will require TOTT in order to extract and sign the log. Found logs not corroburated with a signature in the physical logbook or a directly messaged photo of logbook open, will be deleted.
