Located roughly 14.2km out of Narrabri you will find an old corrugated tank at a crossroad intersection. This tank is a noticeable landmark for all who live nearby as it is updated frequently with spray-painted artwork of local banter and callouts such as "UP CRONULLA". At the time of placing this cache the tank is sporting "Water Is Life" and "Respect Our Water" artwork as we have recently seen relief from a prolonged drought.
"When grazing or moving stock around the state, the grazing industry uses a network of parcels of Crown land called travelling stock reserves (TSR). In addition to grazing and moving stock, the TSR network also has other values such as biodiversity conservation, Indigenous and European culture, and recreation.
There are more than 6,500 TSRs on Crown land in NSW, covering an area of around two million hectares.
TSRs include stock routes, which are corridors (ranging from 60 metres to almost two kilometres wide) that connect smaller watering and camping reserves, generally spaced 10 to 20 kilometres apart (based on a day’s walk for cattle or sheep). The total TSR network in NSW covers almost two million hectares, with 75 percent (including Stock Watering Places) in the Western Division of NSW" (Local Land Services, 2020).
This old corrugated tank is but one example of many that were essential water supplies for drovers and stock on their travels around the state. The cache hidden here is a nano cache so you need to bring your own pen. There is plenty of space to pull over and park off the road.
