This area was once part of the Castle Heights Military Academy parade grounds. It also included the athletic field which was named Gywnn Athletic Field in honor Robert Stroud Gywnn, the academy's head football coach from 1947 to 1972. In recognition for " His Unceasing Devotion to Sports, His School and The Cadet Corps". All that remains today of the once impressive parade grounds and athletic field is the old scoreboard and goal posts.
