Geocache Description:

This is a large pull off car park, easily accessible from either direction. On a clear day you get some amazing views from this spot. Near the GZ there is a map providing the names of what you are looking at.

So many place names make sense, if the knowledge has been past down between generations.

Puketeraki:. Puke=hill; tiraki=lifting sharply skyward. Waitati: Properly Wai-tété, water spurting out.

Water spurts are not seen as regular now as they would have been at the time it was named thanks to the extensive whaling stations set up in 1837. But they are coming back again and the best time to keep an eye out during the colder season from May to October to spot migrating whales.

Looking North over Karitane, it might look like a small settlement there is so much history, I won't try and write about it here are there are some caches in the area which will talk more on the subject.

For your information you can find out the guidelines for Geocaching and Covid-19 in New Zealand. https://wiki.groundspeak.com/display/GEO/New+Zealand . Please do not find this or any other geocaches during Level 3 or 4.
