Church Micro xxxxx - St John the Evangelist, Ilkeston
This is another one of that amazing series of caches that goes under the title of church micros. This is my fifth of the series to be owned and hopefully in the coming weeks I will be able to add more to that list.
I dug for information about this church and once again I was saved by the Ilkeston historical society web page. The church is situated on a mini roundabout and for the last 2 Christmases has been used to house the homeless of Ilkeston for 2 weeks over christmas and new year, providing not only shelter but warmth and food too.
St John's was designed by Currey of Derby, begun in 1893, and dedicated in 1894 by the Bishop of Southwell. It was originally a chapel of ease to St Mary's but became a parish church when the ecclesiastical parish of St John's was formed in 1912. Perhaps the promise of parochial status is what spurred the builders to completion, as apparently building wasn't finished until 1911!
The cache is quite easy and is a micro.
Please be vigilant as the road is very fast and keep an eye on Geo Kids and pets at all times.
The Church micro series can be added to by anyone and a number can be obtained from the series owner by going onto the church micro stats page.
