Geocache Description:

Beach huts are an integral part of the British seaside. They can trace their origins back to the bathing machines of Victorian times, when they were used to transport ladies to the water’s edge, allowing them to enter the water unseen and keep their modesty intact. Bathing in the sea was thought to cure any number of ailments, and yet exposing more than the merest ankle was the height of impropriety.

As attitudes began to change in the early 20th Century, the popularity of bathing machines tailed off, and they were left parked on the beach to be used as changing rooms. From there, they lost their wheels and evolved into the brightly coloured beach huts that are seen in so many seaside towns today.

There are over 20,000 beach huts in the UK alone.

This cache will take you along Hastings’ main ‘herd’ of beach huts. I hope you enjoy the wide variety of colours, designs and uses. There’s rarely a day in Hastings, rain or shine, when the huts aren’t bustling.

I’d love to see your pictures of the huts.
