Questa piazza è intitolata a Hans Lietzmann, pittore e disegnatore tedesco, che visse e lavorò a Torbole per oltre 50 anni. La chiesa di Santa Maria al Lago, che occupa la parte nord della piazza, è stata edificata nel 1939 per i bambini della Colonia Climatica Pavese ( nata nel 1907 come Grand Hotel Torbole e successivamente divenuta preventorio infantile di proprietà dell'ente Colonie di Pavia ) che ha ospitato tra il 1935 e il 1976 più di 8000 bambini a rischio di tubercolosi. La cache è posta vicino ad una stele che ricorda il generale americano William Orlando Darby (famoso fondatore degli US Army Rangers) qui colpito a morte da un frammento di un proiettile di artiglieria da 88 mm a seconda guerra mondiale ormai finita.
