The Endangered UK Birds Series is a circular walk of just under 4 miles starting and finishing in Fleckney. Parking is available either in the village car park, N52.535156, W1.043887, or along one of the side streets in the village.
There are 244 species of birds in the UK. Over a quarter, 27% of them are on the Red List - ‘highest conservation concern’.
Ten years ago only 21% of the species were endangered and included on the Red List.
You may see many birds along the walk and if you're lucky you may see one of the birds on the Red List.
The yellowhammer is a sparrow-sized, bright yellow bird of woodland edges, hedgerows, heath and farmland that feeds on seeds and invertebrates. In the winter, it will join mixed flocks of buntings, finches and sparrows to feed on seeds on farmland. Yellowhammers are often seen perched on top of bushes singing their 'a little bit of bread and no cheese' song.
