This Adventure Lab wil ltake you on a journey from the home of young Bruce Springsteen in Freehold, NJ to his Rock and Roll success along the Jersey Shore.
After moving from Freehold in 1969 and before finding success in Asbury Park, Springsteen lived and practiced in a surfboard factory "Industrial Wastelands of Wanamasa, New Jersey". Bruce's manager Carl Vergil "Tinker" West III was a surfboard designer from the Pacific Beach, California. He served as manager, concert promoter and sound engineer for Steel Mill, The Friendly Enemies, Dr. Zoom & The Sonic Boom and The Bruce Springsteen Band. In 1972 Tinker introduced Springsteen to Mike Appel who got him signed to a record lable
Tinker's Challenger Surfboards factory was near here, and a actually there were several locations, including on 9th Avenue, Sylvania Ave and finally up in The Atlantic Highlands. While Tinker is most notably remembered for his connection with Bruce Springsteen, he was a innovative surfboard designer and accomplished musician; playing the harmonica (Blues Harp) and 12 string guitar for several bands and on various recording. Before Tinker became muscian, concert promoter, band manager and owner of Challenger Surfboards, he was a rocket scientist, who worked at the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) in Pasadena, CA.
In 2015, West was inducted into the New Jersey Surfing Hall of Fame.
