Geocache Description:

Ghost Town at Pinhey Point is a multi-point virtual cache meaning that there isn't anything hidden to find or a log book to sign. As you will discover, the site itself is a treasure. To get credit for this geocache follow the instructions below, submit your answer via email and log your find. However, if we discover that you incorrectly logged your find, we will delete it. Ciao and good luck...
BOOOOO!!! No real hints here, but thanks for looking! ;-}
Waypoint 1:
Make your way to the starting point (N45 26.413 W75 57.200) and park your vehicle. Close by, you will find the official plaque for the site posted by the Ontario Heritage Foundation (indicated at the bottom of the plaque). Now the fun begins...

  • NORTH: The last sentence contains a number. Add the first digit to the last digit then add the number 6. Subtract this result from the North coordinate.
  • WEST: The first full sentence contains a number. Subtract the last 2 digits of this number from the West coordinates.
This result will yield the coordinates of waypoint 2 -- HOWEVER before proceeding to waypoint 2, write down the 2 words in the 2nd sentence that are capitalized with the letters N and W.

Waypoint 2:
Write down the year indicated in the first sentence on this plaque and proceed to waypoint 3.

Waypoint 3: N45 26.423 W75 57.168
Write down the numerical value of the second last word on this plaque (2 digits). Now proceed to waypoint 4.

Waypoint 4: N45 26.433 W75 57.214
Write down the title of this object (2 words, and the second word ends with an "n"). Now proceed to waypoint 5.

Waypoint 5: N45 26.448 W75 57.196
Write down the last 2 words and proceed to waypoint 6.

Waypoint 6: N45 26.556 W75 57.172
Write down the 2 words within this text that appear in quotes and proceed to waypoint 7.

Waypoint 7: N45 26.422 W75 57.188
Write down the year that the final addition to the house was completed in.
Now you have to use the information you've gathered to find the final waypoint.

Waypoint 8:
Grab yourself a snack and a drink and sharpen your pencil...
You should now have collected a total of 8 words and 3 digits. Boo! Really you should do this as a night cache to get the full "ghostly" effect. Whhhoooooo scary! ;-}
Now, using the logic that (A,B,C,...,Z) = (1,2,3,...,26), assign each letter its cooresponding number.
WOW, that's a lot of work! If you've read ahead you'll see that you really only have to do this for the first letter of each word found.
Finally, proceed to solve the last 3 digits of the minute portion of both the North and West coordinates as follows:

  • NORTH: Add up the numeric values of the first letter of each word (total of 8 numbers). Now add to this total the 3 numbers collected (in waypoints 2, 3, 7). You should now have a 4-digit number. Subtract 3342 from this number and use it to replace the "XXX" in N45 26.XXX giving your your new North coordinate.
  • WEST: Subtract 3619 from the total calculated above (we decided to take it easy on you and your calculator). This number will replace the "XXX" in W75 57.XXX giving your your new West coordinate.
Together these coordinates will lead you to your final destination. Make your way to your goal, find the name of this structure (it has a unique name) and email us your findings ( email Tripper & fam. ). Go ahead and post your "Found It!" log -- however, please note that if your email does not contain the correct response, we will have to delete your posted find.

In the 19th century, the Pinhey house had
been expanded to accommodate a growing family.

1830s showing the Pinhey estate at the time.

Enjoy the hunt and enjoy your day!!

NOTES:

  1. The area is great for a family picnic. Excellent view, lots of places to sit, and even the occasional outdoor BBQ is provided.
  2. Another perfect spot for a night time cache - dark, erie, and other than the ghosts, lots of privacy to go about your work. However, unlike our "Puma Head Cache", you will need a flashlight for this one.
  3. Bring a pen or pencil, paper, calculator (optional), and a printout of this geocache page.
  4. Just as a reminder - ALL waypoints begin N45 26.XXX and W75 57.XXX
  5. Apparently NOT winter friendly as they remove all plaques in early October. We'll be back again in the Spring.
