Several months after Germany declared war on the United States on December 11, 1941 Adolf Hitler contacted  Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, chief of the German Abwehr. They came up with a plan to send teams of saboteurs to the United states to disrupt the production and transportation of war goods and troops. Two - four man teams arrived at different location on the east coast of the United States in June of 1942 via U-Boat. One of the targets was the Pennsylvania Railroad. A station in New Jersey, bridges along the mainline, the Horseshoe Curve as well as the Gallitzin Tunnels at Tunnel Hill, Pennsylvania. The plans were discovered by the FBI when the field leader of the saboteurs turned himself in to Assistant Director Ladd. The locals believe that several of the saboteurs had set up an operation center in Blair County close to the Horseshoe Curve and the Gallitzin Tunnels.I came across a bullet riddled block building that just may have served these spies as a hideout. When I discovered one ammo can, seventy eight years later, there were only a handful of spent cartridges cases inside. Explore the area and be careful.
