The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT), in conjunction with the Parley’s Rails, Trails, and Tunnels (PRATT) public interest group, providing funding for an 8.25-mile, shared-use trail that runs east-west along the I-80 corridor and connects the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to the east with the Provo-Jordan River Parkway Trail to the west. For this particular section, Lochner designed an two-mile section of trail from Tanner Park to Sugar House Park, comprised of an all-weather asphalt path, two bridges, and one tunnel. The bridges, which traverse the I-80 on-ramp and 2000 East, are steel truss structures with single spans of 100 to 150 feet. With the trail being close to the Wasatch mountain range, Lochner’s design minimizes the steep grades through detailed earthwork plans and the construction of specialty retaining walls.
