The Captain Janeway Bloomington Collective was formed in early 2019 with the goal of seeing the City of Bloomington, IN honor Kate Mulgrew’s character from Star Trek: Voyager, Captain Kathryn Janeway, who will be “born” there May 20, 2336.
A bronze sculpture atop a limestone base, plated in steel, as well as an accompanying educational display are being designed to serve as a monument to Captain Janeway. As part of this installation, the Janeway Collective is planning a commemoration unveiling to celebrate the character and her future birthplace, with activities highlighting Janeway’s strong leadership alongside the science and technology from the Star Trek universe, and how they impact us today.
We have partnered with local Bloomington non-profit Artisan Alley, which provides affordable spaces, resources, and creative services to the Bloomington community.
Captain Janeway showed humanity, integrity, and determination in the face of repeated challenges to her principles. Mulgrew’s portrayal of Janeway as a scientist, and her role as one of the first female lead characters in a sci-fi series has inspired girls and women in STEM fields for years. She represents ideals that the citizens of Bloomington aspire toward, and qualities we look for in our leaders. Captain Janeway’s character should be honored in her hometown, and the Captain Janeway Bloomington Collective is here to make it so.
