I love watching the hustle and bustle of Columbian Square. This is a high muggle traffic area but GZ gives the opportunity for stealth. Columbian Square holds a lot of history for Weymouth. This location is the site for 3 different buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I have highlighted some of my favorite buildings. If you have time, make sure to check out the local shops and eateries.
The Fogg Opera House was built in 1887 by J. Williams Beal. The building was built for John Fogg and used as a performance space. Seating was provided on two levels, and the proscenium was 35 feet wide. The Fogg Opera House was used for drama, minstral shows, lectures, opera and vaudeville. It has been since converted into apartments on the top floors and a commercial space on the bottom level.
Across the street you have the Fogg Library. The Fogg library was built in 1897 and dedicated in 1898. From 1898 to 1975, the Fogg Library was maintained as a small private library that served mainly the residents of South Weymouth. In November 1975, the Fogg Library became part of the Tufts Library System. It is now used as a childrens library. There are plenty of benches around for you to sit and read or do some people watching.
If you come at the right "time" you will hear the wonderful music billow out from the top of the Old South Union Church which was originally known as the Second Parish Meeting House.
