Geocache Description:

For those that live in this country we will know that when someone from the Ulster section of Ireland says "Welll" (in a high pitched question sounding tone) it means "Are you well?".  Ulsters Welll is of course an anagram of Struell wells and its quite coincidental as this (from way back when pussy was a kitten), was a place where someone would go for healing if they werent well.

The wells have pre christian history in that they were believed to have healing powers by the pagan druids and so they considered the site to be special.  Whenever St Patrick came to Ireland he wanted to convert the Druid's to Christianity and so therefore converted this site and blessed it to be a Holy place for Christianity.  In the writings by St Fiac he recorded that St Patrick would lay all night here in freezing cold water singing Psalms, and would sit on the rocks at the side and pray during the day (which became known as Saint Patricks Chair).  The midsummer bathing that started with the Pagan Druids was still celebrated here and in fact a lot believed that you would have less disease if you bathed in the waters once a year.  In the days when showers and baths would have been quite seldom then they probably had a point in this if only for hygenic reasons.

The site today holds much religious signifcance for those that follow the history of St Patrick and how he was instrumental in converting much of the region of Ireland to Christianity.
