Welcome to a short multi at Hillsboro’s Veterans Memorial Gateway.
The memorial has flags, plaques, and memorial stones honoring veterans who have or did have ties to Washington County. The plaza also serves as a meeting place for event attendees and for civic ceremonies.
You will find the final at N 45° 31.ABC W 122° 56.DEF
At the posted coordinates, there is a pillar with a “Veterans Gateway” plaque.
A = number of words minus one in the first sentence of the plaque, below the title.
Look over the top of the pillar to the memorial stones on the ground. In the first column, second from the top, is a memorial stone for Delmas G. Akers. If his stone says:
- VIETNAM WAR, B = 1
- KOREAN WAR, B = 5
- BERLIN AIR LIFT, B = 8
Walk west towards the flags. On the way, stop at the red stone that starts with “TO COMMEMORATE VETERANS”. C = number of letters in the word beneath VETERANS..
Continue walking west towards the flags. On the way, stop at the “Wartime Service” sign. The bottom paragraph starts “If you are a veteran,...”. Who does it say can contact Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services for information about available benefits:
- Veterans who served during any period, including peacetime, D = 8
- Veterans who served only during the listed periods of wartime service, D = 5
Continue west to the flags. E = the number of flags minus one
There is a plaque on the ground in honor of “Sam” and “Becky” Johnson who served respectively in the U.S. Army and US. Navy. When did they serve?
World War II, F = 0
Vietnam War, F = 2
Gulf War, F = 4
The checksum (total) of the numbers you got for A through F = 36.
