Hatupatu is a legendary maori warrior. This rock features in a traditional story of Hatupatu and Kurangaituku (bird woman).
Now days you will notice many travellers leave food or items at the rock to bless safe journeys and if you wait long enough, there might even be travellers who toot the rock in acknowledgement as they pass.
