Victorian School of Forestry (Creswick, Vic)
by John Dargavel
The Victorian government opened its School of Forestry at Creswick in 1910 to train foresters for its state forest service. It took students with a good school record after a competitive examination at about 15 years of age for a three-year diploma course of theoretical and practical training, after which they were appointed as cadet foresters. The sound academic standard of the course was ensured by the Professor of Botany at Melbourne University, Professor Alfred James Ewart (1872–1937). Victoria continued with its School after the Commonwealth started its national Australian School of Forestry in 1926, partly due to an acrimonious dispute with the Commonwealth Inspector-General of Forestry, Charles Edward Lane Poole over the standard of the Victorian foresters. The Institute of Foresters of Australia was also racked over its refusal to grant normal admission to membership to foresters holding the Victorian diploma. From the mid-1940s, a few students from Creswick went on to Melbourne University to gain a BSc in Forestry. In 1983 the University took over forestry education, using both the Creswick and its main Parkville (Melbourne) campuses. The Creswick campus was also used for technical education courses.
