Geocache Description:

This mystery cache is number 5 in an occasional series highlighting local literary connections.

The headline coordinates are for St Sidwell's School, Exeter, where this author worked as a teacher.

Gene Kemp was a renowned author of children's books, her first work being The Pride of Tamworth Pig though the most celebrated was one of her Cricklepit Series entitled The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler which won both the prestigious Carnegie medal, awarded by librarians, and the 'Other Award' from the 'anti-establishment Children's Rights Workshop'. In recent  years this book was reissued as a Faber Classic.

Gene was born Gene Mary Rushton in 1926 near Tamworth, Staffordshire, and won a scholarship to Exeter University to study English, then having trained as a teacher she taught at St Sidwell's School in Exeter for many years from 1963 until leaving to pursue her writing career, though she retained her connection as a school governor, leaving a bequest on her death to the school library. Her Cricklepit books are directly based on this school and she wrote the last in the series in 2002. She was awarded an Honorary M.A. from Exeter University in recognition of her literary achievements.

Gene had three children, one of whom, Chantal, illustrated many of her books. She lived for some years in Hoopern Street, Exeter, though at the time of her death she was living in nearby West Avenue, not far from St Sidwell's. Her funeral service was held at St David's Church, Exeter, and she is buried in nearby Exwick Cemetery.
