Super Highway:
To reach this cache you go along one of the most ancient routes in Wales. Imagine being a Roman Soldier marching from the fort at Chester to Tomen y Mur ( A Roman Fort north of here with an amphitheatre, well worth a walk on another day). It would have looked very different to today, with native woodland and only a few scattered settlements.

This route remained important throughout history particularly for the Drovers taking their herds of cattle and flocks of geese and sheep to the markets in Shrewsbury and beyond. From the area of the visitor centre, which is known as Dolgefeiliau - ‘Meadow of the Smithies’ you would have seen, or more likely heard, the hullabaloo as the great herds perhaps 400 strong, came down the valley after crossing the Rhinog Mountains from Llanbedr on the coast. Here local blacksmiths shod the cattle for their long journey. The geese had their feet tarred so that they could walk on the made roads. This remained the main coaching road until the new metalled road was built in the valley. See if you can find the milestone, which dates from the 1700’s. This is one of four caches you can find on a circular walk from the visitor centre. (Clash of Iron, Nuggets ore not & Back to the future)

Uwch Draffordd:

I gyrraedd at y celc hwn, rydych yn mynd ar hyd un o’r ffyrdd mwyaf hynafol yng Nghymru. Dychmygwch eich bod yn filwr Rhufeinig a’ch bod yn gorymdeithio o’r gaer yng Nghaer i Domen y Mur (caer Rufeinig i’r gogledd o’r safle hwn, lle ceir amffitheatr –byddai’n werth i chi fynd yno rywbryd). Byddai wedi edrych yn wahanol iawn bryd hynny, gyda choetir brodorol ac ychydig o aneddiadau gwasgaredig.

Mae hon wedi bod yn ffordd bwysig drwy gydol ein hanes, yn enwedig i’r porthmyn a oedd yn mynd â’u gyrroedd o wartheg a defaid a’u heidiau o wyddau i’r farchnad yn Amwythig a thu hwnt. O ardal y ganolfan ymwelwyr, a adwaenir fel Dolgefeiliau (sef y ddôl lle’r oedd gefeiliau’r gofaint), byddech wedi gallu gweld, neu’n fwy na thebyg wedi gallu clywed swn y gyrroedd mawr, a oedd yn cynnwys tua 400 o wartheg, yn dod i lawr i’r dyffryn ar ôl croesi’r Rhinogydd ar eu ffordd o Lanbedr ar yr arfordir. Yma, byddai’r gofaint lleol yn pedoli’r gwartheg ar gyfer y siwrnai hir. Rhoddid tar ar draed y gwyddau i’w galluogi i gerdded ar y ffyrdd. Hon oedd prif ffordd y goets fawr hyd nes adeiladu’r ffordd fetlin newydd yn y dyffryn. A allwch chi ddod o hyd i’r garreg filltir, sy’n dyddio o’r 1700au.
