Geocache Description:

Please see number 1 in the series (Are you a square?) for a full description of the walk, there is street parking available in the village of Weald.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

This is a relatively simple puzzle, the information below will help you to solve it and might assist with a slightly harder one placed close by.

How many rectangles are there in a square grid?

Since a square also fits the definition of a rectangle, these need to be included.

For a 2x2 grid there are four 1x1 squares, four 2x1 rectangles and one 2x2 square; a total of 9 rectangles.

For a 3x3 grid there are nine 1x1 squares, twelve 1x2 rectangles, four 2x2 squares, six 1x3 rectangles, four 2x3 rectangles and one 4x4 square; a total of 36.

The general form for the number of rectangles in a mxm grid is N=[m(m+1)/2]2

If the number of rectangles in a grid 5x5 is given by abc the cache can be found at:

N51 13.(a+a+b)(a/b)a  E000 10.(a+b+c)(a+a+b)(a+b+c)
