Looking carefully at a local map I was intrigued to see the words "Whale Jawbones" and "underpass" on this otherwise unassuming bit of road. Doing a little reasearch, I found that back in the day the bus stop on the old road here was known as "the whales jawbones", the next one being marked as "the scream point" a little further on. Scream point is so named because there visitors would crest the hill and get their first view of the Lakeland fells; and the whale jawbones are just that - the jawbones of a whale turned into an arch.
No-one seems to know exactly when the whale bone arch was originally erected near Gateside Farm and Tolston Hall, but it was over 100 years ago. Where it came from and who put it up is a mystery, but lots of speculation and further information can be found in old articles of the Westmorland Gazette.
When the bypass was constructed the arch was taken down, but after locals investigated its disappearance the arch was found and re-erected in its current location at about half its original height. Quite a rarity and a mystery is passed by hundreds of speeding motorist everyday.
The underpass is a tunnel beneath the bypass south of GZ to enable the safe passage of farm animals .
Please don't touch the arch but do upload a photo to record your visit.
