Skidaway is a barrier island south of historic Savannah. The Aquarium at Skidaway Island is part of the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service, which offers a variety of educational programs and services to inform and enrich the public's knowledge and appreciation of coastal and marine life in the Lowcountry.
The site's most arresting feature is its 14-tank aquarium, which features a variety of marine life native to the area, as well as exhibits showing some of the more spectacular of Georgia's sea creatures. The aquarium is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, with a modest admission charge.
Beyond the aquarium is the Jay Wolf Nature Trail. The trail winds its way through the remains of the old Roebling plantation, and along the trail are the remains of cabins and fences that were used by its human and animal inhabitants. Many of the trail's trees and plants are marked, and you will see such staples as the live oak, saw palmetto, sweet gum and resurrection fern.
Parking is free. There is a small admission fee for the aquarium.
There is a shady picnic area with grills near the trailhead. Bring a bag lunch (& bug spray) & enjoy yourself.
These coordinates take you to the trailhead. About 2/10 of a mile away, there is a fork in the trail. Email me the names of the two trails to receive credit for this cache.
Be sure to find bspeng's S.S. Caretta while you are here.
