Geocache Description:

Please see number 1 in the series (Are you a square?) for a full description of the walk, there is street parking available in the village of Weald.

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

This is a relatively simple puzzle, the information below will help you to solve it and might assist with a slightly harder one placed close by.

How many rectangles are there in a rectangular grid?

Since a square also fits the definition of a rectangle, these need to be included.

For a 1x2 grid there are four 1x1 squares, two 1x2 rectangles, one 1x3 square and one 1x4 rectangle; a total of 8 rectangles.

For a 2x3 grid there are eight 1x1 squares, eight 1x2 rectangles, four 2x1 rectangles, three 2x2 squares, four 1x3 rec9tangles, two 1x4 rectangles and one 2x4 rectangles; a total of 30 rectangles.

The general solution for the number of rectangles in a grid of size mxn (m<n) is N=(m)(m+1)n(n+1)/4

If the number of rectangle in a grid 5x6 is given by abc, the cache can be found at:

N51 13.(a+b)(a+c)(a+a)  E000 10.(a+c)(a+b)(a+c)
