Geocache Description:

Here's another addition to the Hugh Moore Park History Series!  In addition to being a lovely place to visit, the park has a fascinating history that this series of caches explores.

So you're wandering around Hugh Moore Park.  Have you given any thought to who Hugh Moore was and why he's got a park named after him?  He may not be a household name but you probably are very familiar with the products he made famous - Dixie Cups!  It was his brother-in-law who invented them but Moore was the marketing genius who ensured that those little paper cups were everywhere.  The earliest version, the Health Kup, was designed to improve public health.  Before disposable cups were widely available, it wasn't uncommon to use a communal tin cup at a public water fountain.  As doctors and the public began to better understand how diseases like cholera spread, the idea of a cup that only one person's lips touched became much more attractive.  Moore didn't stop there though - he had the company developing cups for beer (a painstaking process apparently), insulated cups for hot drinks, and even single-serve ice cream cups.  The latter were a big hit because of the collectible lids featuring celebrities and characters.

Hugh Moore was also passionate about a variety of causes.  He was concerned about overpopulation on global stability and supported family planning initiatives.  He also lobbied unsuccessfully to have the United Nations be based in Easton instead of New York.  But perhaps most relevantly, he felt that the residents of Easton needed a natural space (like Fairmount Park in Philadelphia) where they could escape from the city and find peace.  He gave Easton the funds to purchase land from the foundering Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company and established a trust fund to help sustain it as a park.  Thus, Hugh Moore Park!

The cache pays homage to the iconic Dixie Cup on the roof of the old factory near 25th Street (now sadly vacant and in disrepair).  It has ample room for TBs and swag.  Given the muggle trail traffic, please make sure you re-hide it well.

Cache is placed with the permission of the City of Easton's park manager.  Please note that Hugh Moore Park is open dawn to dusk.
