Diary Entry: July 9, 1869

North of here is a fort.  You can see that women of our teens are there on every street.  Some of our best athletes even go there.

West of here is even terrain where a wagon excels.  Passing ponds with reeds and fish if our hunger grows.  The sound of jazz erodes the wind, and cheese whiz erodes our teeth.  It is a story on everyone’s mind.

Background on the Whitehall Mystery series

Early in the nineteenth century, prominent citizens from around the northeast would travel by four-horse stagecoach to visit Hopkinton’s famous “Mineral Springs and Hotel” located about four miles from the town’s center.

In the mid-1800’s the hotel was burned to ground under highly suspicious circumstances.  Lost in the fire was a set of priceless jewels that were never recovered, but stories quickly began to circulate that one of the hotel staff members had removed the jewels during the fire and hidden them in the woods nearby. This hotel staff member has never been identified.

Not long after the fire, Lake Whitehall was created by holding back portions of the Sudbury River when public health officials determined in 1878 that additional sources of drinking water were required to support the needs of the Boston area.

It was thought that the jewels were lost forever; however, there has been a new development in the story.  Eight pages of a diary believed to have been owned by the mysterious staff member have been located.  Each page seems to contain a clue to the hiding place of the jewels.

It is hoped that by solving these clues you will be able to locate the missing jewels…good luck!
