Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES. It  is placed along the newly opened Albany-Hudson Electric Trail.

The Albany-Hudson Electric Trail follows the path of the electric trolley line that connected Albany to Hudson from 1899 to 1929. It runs from Rensselaer through East Greenbush, Nassau, the village of Nassau and Schodack in Rensselaer County into Columbia County where it traverses Chatham, Kinderhook, the villages of Valatie and Kinderhook, Stuyvesant, Stockport, Greenport and arrives in Hudson. Details are available on the trail website at www.ahettrail.org.

As cursed year 2020 draws to a close, and Halloween in confinement didn't deliver the thrills and chills it normally would, I sprinkled a few spooky caches along the trail to make up for it. Parents and tender hearts never fear, this "Trail of Terror" is very much family friendly.

Electric Fact: In the late 18th and early 19th century, a variety of experiments were conducted (no pun intended) to explore the use of electricity in detecting and restoring life in persons that appeared to have just died, so as to prevent the horror of burying an injured person still alive. Works of gothic literature, such as Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", were inspired by these efforts.

Here is one dramatic account: "A Mr Squires, of Wardour Street, Soho lived opposite the house from which a three year old girl, Catherine Sophia Greenhill had fallen from the first storey window. After the attending apothecary had declared that nothing could be done for the child Mr Squires, "with the consent of the parents very humanely tried the effects of electricity. At least twenty minutes had elapsed before he could apply the shock, which he gave to various parts of the body without any apparent success; but at length, upon transmitting a few shocks through the thorax, he perceived a small pulsation: soon after the child began to sigh, and to breathe, though with great difficulty. In about ten minutes she vomited: a kind of stupor, occaisioned by the depression of the cranium, remained for some days, but proper means being used, the child was restored to perfect health and spirits in about a week."
