#21 The Dogliest Detective and the Case of the Social Media Cancellations

"Toby, drop whatever worthless case you are working on in your office. You have to fill in for me today at the University. I have a more important meeting out in a fishing boat with a potential client." Toby rolled his eyes and saved his place on the computer KenKen game.

Captain McGruff explained that he was supposed to give the agency's report to the University Scholarship Committee charged with awarding a big scholarship to a worthy Alaska student. One of the five finalists for the scholarship, Estella, was the niece of a major client of the Alaska Consulting Detective Agency.

The Committee originally picked Kya to get the scholarship, as her application file was clearly the best overall. But Captain McGruff did a social media background check and found that Kya had referred to the rival school sports team from Aniak, a village known for having a mix of Russian and Alaskan Native ancestors, as "halfbreeds".

"Once I reported my detective work to the Scholarship Committee, they canceled her selection and hired our Agency to investigate all the other candidates. I did the research and need you to just present our final report to them."

The candidate with the best grades was Jody. She excelled in science, wanted to study physics, had a 3.8 GPA, and test scores at the 85% level. "But our research showed she spent a lot of time online talking about sealing cats inside boxes and guessing about whether they would live or die. We ought to report her to the police."

The student with the best recommendations was Tate. He had a 3.2 GPA and test scores at the 95% level. He was a star hockey player and watched a lot of hockey games and news online. "However, our computer monitoring revealed he is doing a lot of searching for artwork of a 'Kraken', which is a monster usually associated with gangs and the occult."

The candidate with the most extracurricular activities was Mandy. She had a 3.0 GPA, and test scores at the 80% level, but was an accomplished musician. "Mandy spent most of her time online time watching 'Sina Drums' videos, which wasn't a problem, but further digging found she shopped online for drug paraphernalia like small aluminum tubes that hold drug pills and fake rocks to hide them in."

The final candidate was Estella. She had a 2.8 GPA and test scores at the 65% level, but she did have impressive internships with major corporations. Toby had met her once and liked her.

Captain McGruff concluded, "Once the Scholarship Committee has seen all my research and eliminated the other candidates, their only choice will be Estella. Let me know when the vote is final, so I can call Miss Havisham and give her a hint of the good news."

Toby pulled out his phone and ordered an Uber ride to the University for the meeting. On the way, he did some research on his phone and arrived ready to make his presentation. The Scholarship Committee found his research very enlightening and voted to give the scholarship to _______.
