東山三十六峰のひとつ、華頂山のふもとに広がる浄土宗の総本山。正式名称は「華頂山知恩教院大谷寺」
浄土宗の開祖法然上人がお念仏の教えを説かれ、入寂された遺跡にたつ寺院である。
江戸時代には徳川家康、秀忠、家光の外護を受け造営された。中でも元和7年（1621年）に建立された日本最大級の木造二重門である三門（国宝）、寛永16年（1639年）に建立された法然上人をまつる御影堂（国宝）は、日本が誇る歴史文化遺産である。

Chion-in Temple The head temple of all Jodo (Pure Land) Buddhist temples in Japan, its extensive grounds are located at the base of Mt. Kacho, one of the thirty-six peaks of Higashiyama. Its formal name is Kachozan Chionkyo-in Otanidera. This temple was built on the site where its founder St. Honen, the founder of Pure Land Buddhism, spread his teachings about the nembutsu, the invocation of the name of Amida, and eventually passed away. During the Edo period, the temple came under the protection of Tokugawa leyasu, his son Hidetada, and his grandson, lemitsu (the first three shoguns), and the current huge compound was constructed. The Sanmon Gate (National Treasure) built in 1621 is one of the largest two-storied wooden gates in Japan, and the Miei-do Hall (National Treasure), which enshrines St. Honen and was built in 1639, are some of Japan's greatest historical cultural properties.
