The Monacan Indian Nation is a federally and state recognized tribe with remaining tribal area near Bear Mountain in Amherst County, Virginia. Having been officially recognized by the state of Virginia since 1989, the Monacan tribe was recently federally recognized in 2018.
The Monacan people have inhabited more than half of the area of Virginia for 10,000 years. They traditionally buried their dead in sacred earthen mounds. Over a dozen mounds have been found in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont areas, including some over 1,000 years old. In Danville, there is a Monacan burial ground located at the end of Jones Crossing.
