Geocache Description:

This is only my 3rd cache. I have walked here a few times & thought it a great place for a cache. Nearby is Hembury Woods, an ancient woodland, having been continuously wooded since at least 1600. 5 species of rare fritillary butterfly can be found here, along with a healthy population of dormice.

If you walk further into the woods you will find Hembury Castle, the remains of an ancient Dartmoor hillfort, on a spur of land between the River Dart & Holy Brook, known as the 'Danish Camp'. It is said that Vikings sailed up the Dart, pillaging & burning, & captured the fort & the local womenfolk. But, whilst their captors slept, the women arose, slit their throats & opened the fort so that the men could return & re-take it.

Holy Brook is a stream long reputed to have healing powers. It is, in fact, slightly radioactive!
