Geocache Description:

Alchemy noun al·che·my \ˈal-kə-mē\

A medieval chemical science and speculative philosophy aiming to discover the means to transmutate base metals into gold, a universal cure for disease, and the a means of indefinitely prolonging life.

Sulfur is a harmony of the Air and Fire elements. In that way, it is moveable, penetrating, hot, and diffusive. Within the human body, the Sulfur principle is reflected as our soul. The soul under this definition is our own unique expression of the life force. It is our individuality, our true essential nature, our essence. It is the flame of our awareness. The correlation with Air is that our soul is not limited to our body, it has the ability to leave the body through astral projection, dream travel, and visionary journeying.

Alchemists considered Sulfur to be one of the three primes and one of the eleven mundane elements.  For this geocache, I made it letterbox in my series.  Enjoy and Good Hunting!  You’ll need to bring your own ink pad.

There are two ways to find the letterbox. The easiest is an orienteering puzzle you solve in the field. The more challenging is to solve the celebrity trash puzzle.

Orienteering Puzzle.

This puzzle will require you to hike the trails to find landmarks.  Your journey begins at the trailhead coordinates (see the additional waypoints.  Proceed north into the park.  When you reach the first fork in the trail, follow the path to the left and continue to walk the trail loop in a clockwise direction.

Look for the landmarks shown in the photos attached to this cache page.  When you find a landmarkmark, get the coordinates of the point highlighted in the photo.  The final cache is located at a point:

  • 894.167m from landmark 1,
  • 762.602m from landmark 2,
  • 666.413m from landmark 3,
  • 288.696m from landmark 4, and
  • 105.364m from landmark 5.

There are three things to remember when hunting for landmarks:

  • The photographs show the order you will find them as you walk around the trail in the clockwise direction,
  • Landmarks may be off the trail or even behind you so be sure to look all around, and
  • The final letterbox is right off of what would be the outside edge of the trail loop.

Celebrity Trash Puzzle.

Below is an image of four items that I pulled from an individual celebrity’s trash cans.  Can you identify which celebrity?

The celebrity is a movie star that has been active since the late 1980’s and is still going strong today.

You can check your answers for this puzzle on GeoChecker.com.

The first leter of each name is capitalized.  The remaining letters are lower case.  I also recommend typing in the name manually - don't let the Geochecker finish it for you because it adds a space at the end (anticipating the next work).  That space will throw the Geochecker off.

Enjoy and good hunting!

Bonus Geocoin Prize:

Bonus! I have created a home-made geocoin prize to cache hunters who find all three letterboxes representing the three prime elements of alchemy: Sulphur, Mercury, and Salt.

This is a home-made geocoin made from cast resin and hand painted. To earn one: 1) Find and sign the logs for all three letterbox caches listed above; 2) Enter the passphrase found in each letter box into the geochecker +; and 3) Send the geocoin passphrase the Geochecker+ will give you to me via Geocaching.com's message service. I'll verify you have found and logged a find on all five and send a prize geocoin to you.

NOTE: This prize geocoin is optional. All you need to do to log a find is find and sign the log. This is merely a bonus.
