Cache is located in top of Mt. Poke-O-Moonshine not far past the fire tower. This is a rather aggressive clime so bring some water and take your time.
This Cache is located on top of Mt. Poke-O-Moonshine not far from the old fire tower. Some of the best views of the Adirondacks and Vermont Green Mountains can be found from here. The old fire tower has been restored and you can climb the tower for an even more breathtaking view. When you sign in at the trail head pick up a copy of the Poke-O-Moonshine brochure. Along the trail there are 12 numbered markers near some point of interest and the brochure explains what's near each marker.
The hike is about 1.03 miles long and is a rather agressive climb. When you get almost to the top you'll see the remains of the fire observer's cabin. From there go to the left and you will find an old log lean-to (44D 24.009 073D 30.883W) which is still maintained. There is also a fireplace in front of it but check camp fire regulations before you head up. For those of you who have to make a nature call at this point there is also a little brown shack behind the lean-to.
Now that you have rested continue the rest of the way to the top for the most spectacular views in the Adirondacks and the cache. It is a rather tough climb but the rewards on top are worth every bit of it.
Parking is at 44D 24.206N 073D 30.142W. If the park is closed, park by the gate and on the gravel. Go through the gate, turn left and the trail head is way down at the end. The picnic and camping areas close in the off season but the trail is always available.
Note from the new cache owner: Please note the excellent log written by 99celing about how to approach the cache. Start bushwhacking toward the cache when you get to the last big boulder on the trail.
