The general store at 16315 Old River Road in Poolesville, previously known as the Seneca Store and then Poole’s Store, dates to 1901 and served the community continuously for 109 years before closing in 2010. The Seneca Store became a well-known destination and included the town post office and gas station. The store became the oldest general store in continuous operation in Montgomery County. At the turn of the last century, the store was one of over 100 general stores found throughout the county, but when this business celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2001, there were less than 25 of these local mercantile operations that remained. The Montgomery County Department of Parks has rehabilitated the building to create a working store and a heritage tourism destination. It is open once again as a farm and home store.
Note that the parking lot is for store customers. Public street parking on Old River Road in front of the historic home is available. Gets busy with creek visitors in the summer.
