Earl Hill is a 203m high landmark that straddles the Cairns suburbs of Trinity Park to the south and Trinity Beach to the north.
The hill is popular with walkers – particularly after work – and dog-walkers, being one of the few hiking trails within Cairns where furry friends are welcome.
In August 2020, Cairns Regional Council opened a new section of the walking trail up to the summit of Earl Hill, starting from the northern end of Trinity Beach.
This section is challenging due to the incline and sheer number of steps, but at the summit of this section, known as “Little Earl Hill”, walkers are afforded spectacular ocean views, and a panoramic view of the mangroves stretching out across Half Moon Bay and Half Moon Creek.
The hike up the hill from the beach is also a journey through several different ecosystems: tropical beach quickly gives way to open eucalypt grassland, complete with towering grass trees; and lowland rainforest with big strangling figs and the occasional stinging tree can be found on the southern side of the hill; and the rainforest eventually makes way for mangroves at the base of the hill.
Take a hike from either the Flagstaff Drive or Half Moon Bay beach to locate this geocache, which has been hidden on the perfect spot to sit and ponder over this incredible landscape.
The container is a medium-sized glass jar, with room for swaps and a pencil.
PLEASE NOTE: if you are taking a dog with you, please observe local laws and ensure your canine is on-lead at all times. While there is a water fountain at the Flagstaff Drive start of the track, please ensure you bring enough water for the hike.
