Geocache Description:

This is part of the League of Their Own Series which highlights mainly the sport of softball with a little bit of baseball and local history thrown in.

Softball is different from baseball in the way in which the ball is pitched to the batter, the distance from the batter and the elevation of the pitching mound.  Baseball pitchers throw overhand or sidearm, while softballers pitch underhand.

In softballpitchers throw from a flat pitching circle and at a maximum distance of just 46 feet depending on the level of softball.  The distance is 40 feet for Little League, 43 feet for middle and high school tournaments and 46 feet for colleage and international tournaments.  Sofball pitches can reach more than 60mph on the radar gun.

In baseball, the mound is slightly elevated about 10 inches above the field..  It is 60 feet 6 inches from pitcher to batter, with the ball often travelling faster than 90mph.
