Geocache Description:

******CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES!!******

Farmington is a city in St. Francois county located about 75 miles southwest of St. Louis, in the Lead Belt region of Missouri.  Farmington was established in 1822 as Murphy's Settlement, named for William Murphy of Kentucky, who first visited the site in 1798.  At that time it was part of the upper Louisiana Territory and ruled by the Spanish.  Murphy acquired a Spanish Land Grant, allowing him and his family to establish a settlement along the St. Francois River.  Unfortunately, on the way home, William Murphy died at the home of John Murphy in Kentucky.  His family came to the area in the early 1800s to make their homes and play a major part in developing Farmington.

Farmington is surrounded by 9 of Missouri's most scenic state parks and as of the 2010 census, the population was 16,240.  It is the county seat of St. Francois County and when the county was first organized, Farmington was called St. Francois Court House.  It was later renamed because of the area's rich farmland.
