If you're visiting Key West on a cruise ship, stop in here and| call a lookout - a friend or family member who can log in to the Hog's Bar Web-cam! Can't get a lookout now? Fine! There's an open air Internet cafe across the street, ask at Hog's Breath, and the public library is only a 0.6 mile walk away at 700 Flemming St. (South on Duval, Left at Eaton, Right on Elizabeth, On the left as you reach Flemming). Send one of your Geoteam thattaway with instructions.
NOTE: This is a very difficult task for Microsoft Windows computers! I highly recommend you have someone practice taking this picture before you arrive, or skip down to the "WAEF" shot option. WAEF shots might not be pretty, but I'll take 'em and that's all that counts, right?
Here is the new webcam address - it has been "upgraded" to a Windows Media live cam back in February of '07 so taking a still picture is a bit trickier than it has been for the past 5 years. I've changed the difficulty up to 
because of the new technological challenge.

I'm sorry to say that too many visitors have been taking liberties with this "easy find", so beginning in August 2007 I will be unceremoniously deleting inaccurate entries which log cell-phone shots and such as Web-cam pictures. This is not to be mean, it's just that well, the challenge of a Web-cam cache is getting pictured on a Web-cam. See Geocaching.com's cache types for details. Please, enjoy the music and libations, but now you can only enjoy the "smiley" if you successfully record a Web-cam photo.

- Apple/Macintosh computers
- Press the COMMAND-SHIFT-4 keys all together – your cursor is now a cross-hair. Click on any corner of your picture & drag over to the opposite corner. When you release the mouse button a file called "Picture 1" will appear on your desktop, ready to upload.
- Linux
- Press the [ALT] [Print Screen] key combination and their screen capture application should pop up with a picture of the Web-cam page. They can crop and save from this application, then upload!
(Note: Linux can be customized - this is the default keyboard shortcut only. Generally, if they're using Linux there's not much you can tell them that they don't already know about computers)
- Windows PC
- (Let's face it, if you're reading these instructions your lookout is Aunt Mildred who happens to be online listing your cousin on the Sears wedding-gift registry, or something similar. Our goal here is to simply get a snapshot of the whole Web page emailed to you so you can edit it later.)
- Have them visit http://www.hogsbreath.com/hogcam/index.htm
- Once the camera is loaded and they've spotted you (you can tell by the shrill sounds of excitement on the other end of your phone), tell them to press and hold the [ALT] key, then press the [Print Screen] key, and release both keys.
Note: your lookout won't see anything at all happen - this is normal. A snapshot of the Hog's Breath Web-cam page has just quietly been copied into clipboard memory!
- Click the Start button then press [R] on the keyboard. (The Windows button + R works too if their keyboard has one)
- Type the word "mspaint" into the little box that popped-up, and press [ENTER].
- Press in order (do not hold), [ALT], then [E], then [P] (When this is done you often get another shrill of excitement over the phone – your picture has just popped into a new Paint image.)
- Press in order (do not hold), [ALT], then [F], then [A]. A Save dialog just opened up.
- As a safety step, have your lookout read out what it says in the directory location (found in the "Save in:" textbox), and the "File name:", then they may press [ENTER].
- Your picture has been saved with the name they told you, now they just have to email it to you for editing and upload!
- ...When All Else Fails
- The WAEF-shot, invented by gatorsaver as far as I can tell, is to have your lookout take a photograph of the computer screen while you're on the Web-cam. That was so darn innovative that I just had to include it here!
Sorry if this is a bit of a hassle now, if you look back through the early logs it used to be quite easy to save your webcam picture straight from this site. I guess newer technology isn't always better :) |
